From La Scala comes a new staging of an archetypical Romantic ballet on DVD. Last year's production of Giselle features the original version of the choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot and was danced by outstanding dancers, including two of international ballet’s star dancers - Svetlana Zakharova and Roberto Bolle.
First performed at the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris in 1841 as a two-act “ballet-pantomime”, Giselle is hailed by ballet historians as the apotheosis of the Romantic ballet. The ballet was conceived by the influential French poet, author, critic and possibly the greatest champion of the Romantic ballet, Théophile Gautier, who, together with Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges wrote the scenario that inspired Adolphe Adam’s score.
The ballet is divided into a vivid first act with enchanting country dances, colourful costumes and grand scenes and a “white” second act with long, symmetric lines of white ballerinas creating a backdrop against which Giselle lures her partner into soulful pas de deux’.
Giselle revolves around the traditional motif of love triumphing over death, an idea that can be traced back to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and that was to culminate in the later 19th century in the music dramas of Wagner. Giselle thus takes her place in the long line of female characters so dear to the hearts of the Romantics. Women who, even when driven insane, sacrifice themselves for the sake of their lovers and who include Goethe’s Gretchen, Scott’s Mad Lucy of Lammermoor and Wagner’s Senta and Elisabeth.
In this performance, Giselle is danced by Svetlana Zakharova, a Ukrainian dancer, who grew up in the tradition of St Petersburg’s Maryinsky Ballet and is now one of the youngest ballerinas at Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet, where her predecessors include Galina Ulanova, one of the most famous Giselles in the history of ballet. Her partner as Albrecht is Roberto Bolle, La Scala’s current star dancer. The filming for this DVD recreates the atmosphere of a night at the wonderful La Scala opera house, while providing the viewer with a closer look at the dancers, their interpretation and their artistic endeavours. The DVD is accompanied by an informative booklet essay by the eminent ballet critic Horst Koegler.

Conçue comme un énorme show, la pièce impressionne tant par sa maîtrise technique que par la poésie et le charme simple qu'elle exprime. Aussi concourt-il à créer un spectacle en perpétuelle mutation, une sorte de monde flottant, bref à animer le rêve d'illusion

Historic telecasts, 1955-1957 from the archives of the CBC, Toronto Jose Limon (1908-1972) was a Mexican-American choreographer who continues to be regarded as one of the modern dance world's seminal creative artists, known for his intense dramatic presence and the theatricality and musicality of his dances. Here for the first time on video are three of his most famous works with the original casts, filmed in their entirety for the Canadian Broadcasting Company in the 1950s. The Moor's Pavane (1949) is generally considered to be one of the great masterworks in the modern repertory. In the form of a Renaissance dance, Limon distills the legend of Othello into a taut, one-act human drama with music by Henry Purcell. Joining Limon are his close collaborators Lucas Hoving, Pauline Koner and Betty Jones. Telecast date: March 6, 1955 (21 minutes). The Traitor (1954) was Limon's response to the McCarthy hearings and the climate of betrayal that haunted the arts and entertainment fields during this period. Against a music score of violence, passion and tenderness (by Gunther Schuller), the tragedy of Judas is portrayed as if it were taking place in modern times. Telecast date: October 23, 1955 (19 minutes). The Emperor Jones (1956) is based upon the play by Eugene O'Neill wherein a fugitive from a chain gang sets himself up as the ruler of an island domain. He becomes a tyrant, and his mistreated subjects eventually rebel and hunt him down. For this dance, Limon commissioned a musical score from Heitor Villa-Lobos. Telecast date: March 13, 1957 (23 minutes).

The title is perhaps pushing it a bit, but there are certainly some fine things in these performance documentaries of three leading dancers from German ballet companies, notably Malakhov and a radiant Diana Vishneva in a pas de deux from Manon, and Lucia Lacarra and Cyril Pierre in Val Caniparoli's Lady of the Camellias. However, viewers of a nervous disposition are warned that Malakhov's costume in Le Spectre de la rose gives new meaning to the phrase 'see through'.

In October 1993, the St. Petersburg documentary film company, MIRIS, sent out a fax to the West - almost like a message in a bottle. They needed a partner to complete a series of films on Russian ballet. NVC ARTS, with a long tradition of working with the Bolshoi and the Kirov, responded to the call.
The two directors of MIRIS had spent five years researching state archives, museums and private collections, discovering many wonderful items that had never been shown anywhere. For the first time, thanks to the new political situation, it was possible to bring the material out of Russia. It was carefully treated by the most up-to-date methods to achieve the best technical quality of both picture and sound.

Prince Siegfried celebrates his twenty-first birthday; his mother tells him it is time to marry, but he prefers to go hunting. Alone, by a lakeside, he sees a swan who turns to human form. She is an enchanted princess who can be saved only by true love. He promises this, but is tricked by the wicked magician who disguises his own daughterias the swan-maiden. In despair, Siegfried and the swan-maiden leap to death together and their sacrifice destroys the evil power.
