Combinando
Camarim e
cenas mostram a necessária concentração
do bailarino fora do palco, bem como sobrem. FIELD FIGURES,

- Car Men Jiri KYlian's
A comédia

Finis and Katie go through all the basic points of teaching
barre, from beginner thru advanced. He tells you everything
he’s observed in 35 years of teaching pro’s and

work. Here are The Rules of Barrework which will help you avoid
common mistakes and enable you and your students to get the
most out of the barre. This detailed, comprehensive guide to
all the things you and your students need to know will give

- The Art of Pointework Level 5: Pirouettes
DESCRIPTION
Finis shows and explains each exercise, 15-year-old Saige
demonstrates on both sides, Finis comments and analyzes, and
then Saige repeats the exercise. This video is all about the
preparations that create the results. Watch how Saige turns
her plié and rolls through her feet. As she starts
dancing across the floor, notice how Saige places and works
her plié and pushes with her feet, which results in
beautifully placed triple pirouettes en dehors. Finis and
Saige then concentrate on the en dedans pirouette, showing
you how to prepare for these tricky turns so that you will
really get on your leg and turn with ease.
Besides giving you technical instructions and demonstrations
on everything from simple pirouettes to grand pirouettes en
dedans, Finis has also choreographed some of the exercises
so that you can work on your dancing skills. And, of course,
Saige works on the ballerina's "bread & butter"
steps — piqué turns and fouetté turns.
After Saige shows her single fouetté turns, she goes
on and does doubles. Dance, Ballerina, Dance!

DESCRIPTION
Reviewing Michele's debut as the ballerina in Balanchine's Theme
& Variations at The Metropolitan Opera House in New York
City, Jennifer Dunning of the New York Times said "Ms.
Wiles tore through the demanding ballet like a colt, newly released
and running free . . . her big open torso and appetite for space
were a pleasure." Now, we're talking Balanchine, which
is the fastest pointework on earth. How does Michele do it?
What enables her to dazzle the audience and critics? This video
shows you the "secrets." You'll be amazed when you
see what Michele does in slow motion, close-up, and freeze frame.
The beauty and precision of her pointe work is riveting and
eye-opening. Finis analyzes all of her movements, so that you
can understand and apply what you see and hear. Tobi Tobias
of New York Magazine said that Michele is "a big, bold
blonde on her way to stardom." If you'd like to get reviews
like that, I'd study this video seriously.

and repeated in real time. Some exercises feature close-up
sections, as well as freeze frames. You'll see all the little
details that will make a difference. For instance, you've
got to get on the stage, and you've got to get off, and you're
either going to have to walk or run, and we can't tell you
how many times we've seen pretty dancers galumph on and off
stage, as though their pointe shoes were bedroom slippers.
Michele shows you how to do it correctly, so your first and
last impressions will be memorable. Scott Killian's fresh

- Rosas Anne Teresa Keersmaeker - Hoppla

- Achterland Keersmaeker
A coreógrafa é
Anne Teresa De Keersmacher. A dança é bastante
do elenco.
do próprio estúdio. Os bailarinos usam roupas
comuns.

- Amelia - La La La Human Steps
O nome do ballet é “Amelia”, e é
Human Steps". Ele é coreografado usando as formas
A iluminação
também é muito intrínseca.
A
ação é, em sua maior parte, rápida
e frenética; a coreografia é bastante desafiadora,
incluindo alguns passos muito complexos, tanto no chão
quanto no ar. Se você gosta de ballet ultramoderno, não
pode perder essa obra!

- BALLET CONDITIONING
Data
de Lançamento mundial: 04/12/2007
"Great workout! After reading the positive reviews here,
I decided to purchase the 'Ballet Conditioning' DVD. It has
been fantastic! I wanted a good workout that incorporated ballet
movements from classes I have taken. This does it! It's 51 minutes
long, begins with some stretching, a plie series, tendus (sp?),
a series of jumps to increase your heart rate and a section
of abdominal workouts. After the stretches, she does several
plie series that left my thigh muscles quivering the first time.
I felt like I had lost an inch off my legs & waist after
the first time. The instructions are clear and easy to follow.
She does each side, using a chair for balance and with the arms
incorporated, they become sculpted also. Each time I do the
workout, I find something new to improve upon in each movement.
My flexibility improves each time and that allows me to perform
each movement more gracefully. I love this DVD and can't wait
to see how it shapes my body in the next few months."

- CASSE - NOISETTE CIRCUS (Monte Carlo)
Les Ballets de Monte Carlo
Choreography: Jean-Christophe Maillot
Though the current Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo was established
in 1985, its lineage can be traced back directly to Diaghilev's
ground-breaking troupe through a number of related ballet companies
attached to the city. In 1993, the choreographer Jean-Christophe
Maillot became the company's artistic director and has subsequently
helped it evolve from a regional company charged with upholding
a tradition to a European contender with a unique vision and
style. The tradition that Maillot has mostly maintained is the
narrative style that Diaghilev pioneered. Many mid-century choreographers,
like George Balanchine, who was a product of the Ballets Russes,
tried to make modern ballet purer, as movement set to music
with no overt story to tell. Maillot not only connects everything
on stage to the story, he makes the story his own in ways that
traditionalists may find alarming.
His version of the classical ballet The Nutcracker is an innovative
interpretation of the well-known subject. It was Maillot’s
brainchild to transpose the ballet into the world of circus,
while keeping the basic tenet wherein the real world blends
with the fantasy world of childhood. In the first part of the
ballet, set in Paris during the Second Empire, he alters the
plot by splitting the character Drosselmeier into a couple-
Drossel and Meier – seen all throughout the ballet as
they inspire Marie’s initiatory dream. The ballet reaches
its climax in the second act: the world of circus then opens
up to little Marie, with a series of funny, touching and poetic
scenes that will delight and enchant both the young and old.
The recording presented on the DVD in hand was recorded in the
Festival Tent of Fontvieille in 1999. |

- BLACK CAKE AND CONCERTANTE
BAVARIAN STATE BALLET
Author: van Manen, Hans
Published: 2006
Black Cake takes place at a society party, where elegantly-dressed
couples dance with each other and reveal unsuspected undercurrents
in the relationships between men and women; both humour and aggression
are found in Concertante, which generates an explosive
tension in a succession of encounters between four male and four
female dancers.
Concertante is danced to the twentieth-century Swiss
composer Frank Martin's Petite Sinfonie Concertante,
while for Black Cake van Manen uses pieces by Tchaikovsky,
Janácek, Stravinsky, Mascagni, and Massenet. [Coded for
regions 2 and 5: the UK and Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt,

Actors: Alexander Rumyantsev, Larisa Tuisova, Gennady
Gorbanev, Maris Korystin
Language: English
Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1
Run Time: 128 minutes
The Armenian born, Soviet composer, Aram Khachaturian, created
music for the ballet, Gayne(also transliterated as Gayane and
Gayaneh, taken from the Armenian, a female name meaning lovely
and elegant--it is pronounced guy-yah-NEH, with the stess on the
last syllable) in the first half of the twentieth century. He
actually created two versions: a long version and a shorter one.
The performance on this DVD is actually the shorter one, but it
is still 81 minutes long(this DVD also includes 47 minutes of
extras, so don't worry, you'll get your money's worth!). Gayne
has only been seen rarely in the West, but is very popular in
Russia and the rest of the former Soviet Union. One scene from
Gayne actually is well known everywhere, and that is the famous
Sabre Dance. Yes, the Sabre Dance is from Gayne! The importance
of this ballet in the history of ballet makes this DVD all the
more welcome.
This version is choreographed by Boris Eifman and performed by
the Latvian Opera And Ballet Company. The choreography is wonderfully
intense and impressive, danced to perfection by this Latvian company.
In the typical style of Soviet ballet in the twentieth century,
Gayne contains an abundance of male dancing, perhaps even more
than female, but there is plenty of female dancing, mostly on
pointe.
This performance was recorded live, in 1980, at the Bolshoi Theatre(yes,
companies other than the Bolshoi perform at the Bolshoi Theatre,
even the Kirov Ballet!). The image quality is not as good as today's,
but it is quite good, nevertheless, and in color. The sound is
in mono, but of good quality.
The lighting is also typically Russian, with a rather dark, colorful
background and spotlights on individual dancers and dancer combinations.
All the curtain calls are included, and they have prepared a little
choreography for some of them, which is rather charming.
Surprisingly(actually, VAI, the studio that produces this DVD,
is often generous with their extras!), 47 minutes of extras are
included. The first one is an older, black and white segment,
with remarkably excellent mono sound, of the entire last act of
the longer version of Gayne(yet another version of the Sabre Dance
is in this segment--this version has the Sabre Dance in the last
act, whereas the Latvian performance has it in the second act,
which seems to make more sense in terms of the story), performed
by the Bolshoi Ballet and conducted by Khachaturian, himself.
There is yet another extra from an older Gayne, and also two segments
from the Spartacus ballet(also by Khachaturian), all performed
by the Bolshoi Ballet, and all in black and white, except for
the last one of Spartacus, which is in color.
With all this DVD has to offer, this really deserves to be in
any serious ballet video collection. |

- PETER AND THE WOLF; ENFANT ET LES SORTILEGES
Sir Anthony Dowell, The Royal Ballet School; Nederlands
Dans Theater.
Published: 2000
A useful coupling of two favourite ballets, for adults and children.
Peter and the Wolf has choreography by Matthew Hart, L'Enfant
et les Sortileges by Jiri Kylian.
It was a happy idea to couple the Royal Ballet School production
of Peter and the Wolf with the Netherlands Dance Theatre's
L'enfant et les sortiléges, for in each story
the boy is the protagonist, in one instance leading a wolf hunt
and in the other wreaking revenge on his toys after his mother
has locked him in his room to finish his homework. Neither work
in their final form was conceived for dancing: the Prokofiev
comes from the concert hall and the Ravel from the opera house.
Colette, the authoress of Gigi penned the story of
L'enfant et les sortil&ecute;ges, which is related
here in an introduction by the choreographer Jiri Kylian with
charm and a nod back at his own childhood pranks. Viewers coming
to this dance version of the opera for the first time maybe
be surprised that Ravel composed the boy's role for a girl and
a rather buxom one in this instance. The somewhat gloomy, heavily
embroidered production misses no opportunity in bringing to
life the toys in the boy's room or the animals in the garden
that turn on him in retribution. In conclusion as an act of
compassion of binding the paw of an injured squirrel, the boy
and the animal kingdom are reconciled in music of a truly sublime
nature. Lorin Maazel conducts Ravel's sophisticated and witty
score with its translucent vocal lines with the affection for
which he has long been renowned.
In marked contrast to that production, Peter and the Wolf
is set against a plain backdrop with one prop, a slice of carved
tree trunk centre stage. Anthony Dowell narrates and also dances
the role of the Grandfather with aplomb. In each instance a
musical instrument represents a character. The choreographer
Matthew Hart marshals his small group of dancers, duck, cat,
bird and wolf, with imagination and dexterity. David Johnson
as Peter (represented by the full orchestra) gives a splendid
performance, boyish and graceful, making a further excellent
advertisement for schoolboys considering dancing as a career
in the wake of Billy Elliot. A stylish presented and
well contrasted double bill. |

An excellent introduction to the art of ballet technique!
David Howard's Ballet Class for Beginners is an excellent

- THE NUTCRACKER - George Balanchine's
Tchaikovsky's timeless Yuletide ballet is presented in an all-new
movie version with as much eloquence as one would find in a
live stage production. Replete with gorgeous costumes and scenery,
George Balanchine's production, adapted by Peter Martins, features
the New York City Ballet with narration by Kevin Kline. From
the moment the Nutcracker prince winds toymaker Drosselmeier's
life-sized dolls, viewers are ushered into the captivating story
of a little girl's Christmas Eve fantasy of beauty, magic, and
sugarplums. While several versions of this beloved tale are
available in video, this one is distinguished for the magnificent
performances of a large cast of young ballet dancers from the
School of American Ballet. While Culkin lends his star-studded
name, that is all he lends in what is mostly a wooden performance
(he often appears on the sidelines looking quite blasé
and detached). More deserving accolades go to Jessica Lynn Cohen
as Marie, whose genuineness never wanes and dance steps never
falter. Bart Robinson Cook is wonderful as the playful Herr
Drosselmeier, and Darci Kistler is the graceful Sugarplum Fairy.
Mostly this film belongs to children--both on the stage and
in the audience. What is lacking in spontaneous energy of live
theater is made up for in a perfectly polished performance.
The only thing missing is the well-earned applause. --Lynn
Gibson

- AUSTRALIAN BALLET FAVORITES
This compilation of the Australian Ballet favourites, is organised
chronologically, allowing the viewer to see the evolution of
classical ballet from romanticism, through to more modern and
contemporary works. It covers Giselle, Coppelia, Swan Lake,
The Sleeping Beauty, Spartacus and finally, Songs of a Wayfarer.
Both the performances and the recording are of a beautiful standard,
displaying the dramatic action, the costumes, and the sets admirably.
It is also notable for the dancers - who have a very unique,
athletic and "real" quality. Filmed at varying intervals between
1984 and 1990, the video gives a chance to see some of the better
known of the Austalian Ballet's stars. Notable is the stary
partnership (and amazing virtuosity) of Lisa Pavane and Greg
Horsman in Coppelia, the lyricism of Miranda Coney in Swan Lake,
and the very masculine Steven Heatcote in Spartacus. A great
video for anyone who wishes to sample little of everything. |

- CARMEN BALLET
Mikhail Baryshnikov, Zizi Jeanmarie (1980)
There's never been a Carmen like this one - there's
never been a Don Jose like Baryshnikov! Ballet superstars Mikhail
Baryshnikov and Zizi Jeanmaire sizzle in this erotically charged
ballet set to the music and story of Carmen. The program's highlight
is a sexy duet between the show's stars, in which they express
their fatal attraction. Famed choreographer Roland Petit created
this dance spectacular, set to Georges Bizet's classic music.
This remarkable ballet provides Baryshnikov with one of his
greatest roles, and proves yet again he is the most charismatic
performer of our time! |

- THE NUTCRACKER (Royal Ballet)
The Royal Ballet Covent Garden captures all the fantasy and
magic of one of the world's most popular ballets, based on E.T.A.
Hoffmann's enchanting story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse
King. Guest conductor Gennaday Rozhdestvensky draws "ravishing
playing from this most ravishing of Tchaikovsky's ballet scores."
(Guardian) Though the original scenario for The Nutcracker was
considered to be fatally flawed, this delightful work has survived
to become one of the most enduring favorites in the ballet repertory.
This new production by the Artistic Designer of the Royal Ballet,
Peter Wright, with the help of Tchaikovsky ballet expert Roland
John Wiley, resurrects from far-flung archives the original
Ivanov/Sergueyev staging, and combines it with captivating modern
stage effects.

a suitor, of witch Hilarion, the village gamekeeper,is the most
persistent. One day,Prince Albrecht passes through the village
and immediately upon seeing fair Giselle, he falls in love with
her.Enraptured by her frail beauty and innocence.Albrecht disguises
himself as a peasant and attempts to capture the girl's heart.Giselle,
not knowing that the handsome young man is a Prince, falls desperately
in love with him.Hilarion, who has learned of Albrecht's true
identity, pleads with Giselle not to waste her affections on
the wrong man.In utter disbelief,Giselle neverthelessconfronts
Albrecht, who eventually confesses to already being engaged to
a noblewoman named Bathilde.Overwhelmingly distraught and horrified,
Giselle's heart is breaking and she dies at Prince Albrecht's
feet.
The once so cheerful girl who loved to dance, now finds herself
in a world of spirits who have endured an equally painful and
sad lot:the Wilis are spirits of betrothed maidens who have
had to die before their wedding night. With unbridled revenge, they
lure young men and dance them to their death.Hilarion, who is
keeping vigil at Giselle's tomb, is chased by the Wilis and
drowns in a pond.Albrecht, laden with feelings of guilt and
remorse, is the Wilis' next victim, but Giselle, even though
she is now one of the spirits, has kept her kindness and virtue
: she forgives him and saves his life.At dawn's early light,Giselle
returns with the Wilis, recognizing that now she will be one
of them for all eternity."

- GLORY OF THE KIROV
From the early days of this century, the Maryinsky Ballet, later
the Kirov, dazzled audiences with the beauty of the dance. Five
years research in Russia's archives has unearthed fascinating
footage, much of it never before availableiin the West, of many
of the company's great dancers.
Extracts From: Swan Lake / Raymonda / Viennese
Waltz / Reflection / Le Corsaire / Laurencia / The Tale of Serf
Nikish / The Dying Swan / Pas de Quatre / Syrinx / Spartacus
/ Romeo and Juliet / The ice Maiden / Les Sylphides.
In October 1993, the St. Petersburg documentary film company,
MIRIS, sent out a fax to the West - almost like a message in
a bottle. They needed a partner to complete a series of films
on Russian ballet. NVC ARTS, with a long tradition of working
with the Bolshoi and the Kirov, responded to the call.
The two directors of MIRIS had spent five years researching
state archives, museums and private collections, discovering
many wonderful items that had never been shown anywhere. For
the first time, thanks to the new political situation, it was
possible to bring the material out of Russia. It was carefully
treated by the most up-to-date methods to achieve the best technical
quality of both picture and sound. |

- COPPÉLIA
The Kirov Ballet - 2006
Ballet
In Two Acts
Coppélia is a classical ballet in the true sense, and
with its touch of East European folklore, continues to enjoy
worldwide popularity. It combines the romance between Swanilda
and Franz with the story of the doll-maker Coppelius, whose
greatest desire is to create a doll with a soul. Franz immediately
falls in love with Coppélia, who he thinks is real, but
eventually recognizes is just a doll. He returns to Swanilda,
after which the final grand divertissement sees everyone reconciled. |

- CARMEN BIZET / SHCHEDRIN
Cullberg Ballet (Mats Ek) (1994)
Mat Eks' Carmen ballet is a psychologically probing and at the
same time highly amusing. It depicts the story from Jose's point
of view, beginning with him facing the firing squad, then dissolving
into his life with Carmen.
In this soldier's tale, his "lieutenant" is distinguished
by his moustache. The mustached soldier leads his men with an
officiousness and absurdity reminiscent of Monty Python's "crazy
walks." This leader is but one rival for Carmen's attentions.
Her prior lover, only hinted at in the opera, seems a serious
and recurrent rival here. And then, of course, there is Escamillo.
He is handsome, flashy, and sexual.
All of the dancers perform superbly, but Ana Laguna's Carmen requires
special mention. She portrays a spectacular, powerful, and highly
sexual Carmen; it is also a Carmen who is intentionally shown
without beauty or grace. Carmen is too controlling, too independent
as Jose recalls her to have even a hint of delicacy. She contrasts
superbly with Jose's view of Micaela: dutiful, caring, tireless,
and dull. But there is nothing dull about this ballet. |

- THE NUTCRACKER ROYAL BALLET (2001)
Starring: Anthony Dowell, Alina Cojocaru
Director: Roger M. Sherman
This Royal Ballet production of "The Nutcracker" (staged
by Peter Wright) is a mix of the "Balanchine" and
"Vainonen" schools of the Nutcracker. The Balanchine
version of the Nutcracker emphasizes the child's fantasy --
a land of sweets, with comic relief. The Vainonen Nutcracker
emphasizes the romantic dreams of an adolescent. The Russian-influenced
Nutcrackers veer towards the Vainonen school, while in the U.S.
Balanchine-based Nutcrackers are the norm.
The Royal Ballet attempts to have it both ways. Clara in this
case is an adolescent girl, played by an adult ballerina. The
storyline is that Herr Drosselmeyer once had a nephew, Hans-Peter,
who was transformed into a Nutcracker. It is this Nutcracker
who is transformed into Clara's Prince, and the Prince and Clara
go off to the Kingdom of the Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy
reigns supreme. At the end of the ballet, Drosselmeyer's nephew
is transformed back into a boy, and all ends happily.
There is one chief reason to get this ballet: the remarkable
Alina Cojocaru. She's now the Royal Ballet's prima ballerina.
See her here, and you'll see why her career has been raves and
more raves. For such a tiny, girlish-looking ballerina, Cojocaru
has a huge stage presence. She seems to float through the air
as if pushed by a cloud. She was trained in Kiev and has the
Russian imprints: huge, beautiful grand jetes, beautiful arms,
highly arched back. Ivan Putrov is her Prince, and he also is
excellent. In the second act, Clara (Cojocaru) gets to dance
in some of the divertissements, and I was overjoyed, if only
to see Cojocaru dance.
Unfortunately, the rest of the cast is not as strong. Miyako
Yoshida, the Sugar Plum Fairy, was a sub for Darcey Bussell,
and she's not at all well-paired with the very tall Jonathan
Cope. Yoshida is the opposite of Cojocaru -- a very earthbound
dancer. She's solid, but unremarkable. Her rather square frame
is a painful contrast to the ethereal, long-limbed Cojocaru.
Anthony Dowell is Herr Drosselmeyer, and he's way too fond of
waving his cape around. He seems to think this is character
development. It's not.
The production overall is very handsome, although the wigs that
the corps have to wear are as usual unattractive. (Are there
ever attractive wigs in ballet?) The dvd comes with a bonus
of a backstage look at the growing Christmas tree. |

- NUTCRACKER
Tchaikovsky / Baryshnikov
The Nutcracker is Mikhail Baryshnikov's breathtaking and critically
acclaimed Emmy nominated production. This spectacular performance
is danced by the magnificent team of Baryshnikov, on of the greatest
classical dancers of the century, and Gelsey Kirkland, both showcased
at the park of their careers, with members of the American Ballet
Theatre.
The Nutcracker is the magical and lighthearted story of a small
girl's dream on Christmas Eve. Mikhail Baryshnikov is the toy
Nutcracker-turned-Prince in this exhilarating production that
marked his initial and universally acclaimed choreographic effort.
Gelsey Kirkland is little Clara, the dreamer, and Alexander Minz
is Drosselmeyer, the wizard who conjures up the dream and eventually
dispels it. Extravagant sets and costumes bring the beauty of
this winter wonderland to life. The magical aspects will delight
children, while the spectacular sets and performances will enchant
and delight the child in all of us.
Celebrated by critics and public alike, Baryshnikov's The Nutcracker
delivers a brilliant and sparkling adaptation of the famous E.T.A.
Hoffman tale along with Tchaikovsky' classic score. The athleticism
and precision of Mikhail Baryshnikov's solo variations will make
you gasp and take your breath away. The Nutcracker, a holiday
perennial on network and public television, is a truly remarkable
treasure that will be enjoyed by all for generations to come. |

-ROMEO AND JULIET
Starring: Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, David Blair
This film is the famed Royal Ballet production of Romeo and Juliet.
This historical performance stars Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev
as the quintessential stage lovers. It captures the greatest dance
partnership of our century at the peak of their careers.
Fonteyn and Nureyev's performance has been critically hailed as
"perfection in movement which epitomizes the freedom that
lies beyond technical mastery. It expresses itself as poetic lyricism."
Romeo And Juliet features the music of Sergei Prokofiev; a work
which has been recognized as the first great full-length ballet
score since Tcahikovsky's classics. The choreography of Kenneth
Macmillan is acknowledged as the reason for the ballet's successful
transfer to the film medium. John Lanchbert conducts the Orchestra
of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. |
